DESCRIPTION:
The Lower East Side Ecology Center has had three main objectives since its inception in 1987:
1. To provide community based recycling and composting programs to supplement existing NYC curbside programs,
2. To develop local stewardship of public open space and
3. To increase community awareness, involvement, and youth development through environmental education programs.

PUBLIC RESOURCES (FREE):
  • Environmental education classes for all ages/sectors, focusing on NYC issues, including: Climate and Energy, Water in NYC, Women's Environmental Leadership, NYC Stewardship, Waste Prevention, Urban Composting (Indoor and Outdoor), and more.
  • Climate Change Science, Policy and Solutions Presentation and Discussion for all ages/sectors (in collaboration with Al Gore's The Climate Project)
  • The Climate Crew--an action-based group of individuals in NYC concerned with climate change issues and reducing our impacts.
  • NYC environment lesson plans
  • Climate guides to NYC (in development)
  • Electronics recycling events
  • Volunteer stewardship days
  • Community Compost Drop-off at Union Square Greenmarket and the Lower East Side Ecology Center Garden
